We are having an exhibition of LA-based photographer/artist, Brian Merriam ”The Absolute Recedes” starting on 26th Fri July in commemoration of the launch of his newest book co-published by commune Press and Brian Merriam.

With the exhibition of the Absolute Recedes, Merriam attempts to take the uniqueness of the book another step further.
All images are presented printed on handmade papers from around the world (Nepal, Japan, Mexico) giving each piece a distinct and unique appearance. In a departure from traditional edition-based photo printing, the flaws and peculiarities of the papers are celebrated and incorporated into the pieces.
They are meant to feel singular, organic and ephemeral, more akin to living beings than to photos hanging on a wall.
Numerology and esoteric symbolism are subtly woven throughout.
Generally unnoticeable to the uninitiated but apparent to those who know what to look for, these elements are meant to add a power and resonance to space, perhaps invisible to the eye, but physically palpable to those present.

Brian Merriam is an artist and musician living in Los Angeles, CA. Highly personal though largely metaphorical, his work seeks to unveil universal concepts through direct engagement with places of power and natural phenomena. Through his art, Merriam
endeavors to illustrate that resonant and symbolic forms are to be found everywhere, from the microscopic world to the peaks of the Himalayas, where he has traveled extensively. He is represented by Los Angeles based gallery Tappan.
